- Maldon District Council has successfully prosecuted a man from Burnham-on-Crouch for the illegal felling of six trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).
The defendant appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 4 September 2025, where he pleaded guilty to six offences of causing or permitting the cutting down of six protected trees in Burnham-on-Crouch in June 2024.
The trees felled included three Horse Chestnuts, two London Planes, and one Lime Tree. These trees were subject to a Tree Preservation Order due to their significant environmental and amenity value.
The court heard that the combined CAVAT (Capital Asset Value for Amenity Trees) value of the trees was estimated at £197,015.00.
The man was fined £2,533.00 and ordered to pay a Criminal Courts Surcharge of £1,013.00 and costs of £1,769.99, bringing the total financial penalty to £5,315.99.
Councillor Richard Siddall, Leader of Maldon District Council, said: “This successful prosecution sends a clear message that we take the protection of our district’s trees very seriously. Trees play a vital role in our environment and community wellbeing, and those protected by Tree Preservation Orders are legally safeguarded for good reason. We will continue to take robust action against those who flout these protections.”
The Council will continue monitoring this matter to ensure that suitable replacement trees are planted by the landowner.
- Maldon District Council is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the ‘Where Quality of Life Matters Fund’, a community grants initiative designed to support projects that enhance the wellbeing and quality of life for residents across the district.
Eligible groups can apply for up to £10,000 to support initiatives that make a meaningful difference in their communities. Applications are open from 1 September 2025 until 30 November 2025 and can be submitted on the Council’s website at https://www.maldon.gov.uk/communitygrants.
- Maldon District Council is pleased to announce that the Maldon District Community Safety Partnership has officially rebranded to become the Safer Maldon Partnership.
Established under the 1998 Crime and Disorder Act, the partnership has evolved significantly in both scope and focus. The new name reflects the activities and aims of the partnership today; it now works dynamically and strategically across a broader range of safety and wellbeing initiatives. The Safer Maldon Partnership brings together Maldon District Council, Emergency Services, NHS, Probation Service, and Voluntary Sector to tackle issues that affect the safety and resilience of our communities
Activities include tackling anti-social behaviour, supporting domestic abuse survivors, promoting fire safety and crime prevention, and coordinating responses to concerns and issues raised by residents.
- Bookings are now open for the 2025 Saltmarsh Coast Walking Festival. This year’s festival will combine both coast and countryside with over 35 guided walks to choose from. Plus, storytelling social media sensation James Lawrence, also known as ‘Man About Country,’ will be leading a walk around Goldhanger.
The free walking festival is taking place from 26 September to 5 October 2025 and will take walkers on a number of routes around the district, showcasing some of the areas hidden gems.

Railway Halt Bridge Repairs, Church Lane – Latest
We had a progress meeting this morning and I understand that the planning application is due to be submitted shortly (about two weeks from today), you can view this on the Essex County Council planning portal once it has been submitted. You won’t find anything before we submit.
The images below are 3D sketches of what is intended, before and after. Essentially, we intend to fill the outer arches and create an embankment, the centre arch will be reinforced with a corrugated steel multiplate arch system which is commonly used in this scenario. This allows us to support full carriageway loading, and in doing so re-open the road, whilst maintaining the bridleway beneath the bridge.
