Thieves steal lead from Church roof
It is believed that sometime last week (it was first noticed on Sunday 1st November), selfish, thieving vandals removed all the waterproofing roof lead from St Mary & St Margaret’s Church.
Thanks to the diligence of John and Chris Dutfield and prompt action by them and fellow villagers – particularly Dave Stratton and Matt Cooper – the roof has now been covered with temporary tarpaulins.
Although the effort and expense of providing this temporary solution has largely been borne by the above named ‘saviours’, insurers have been informed in the hope that a more permanent fix can be put in place before the onset of really bad winter weather.
The police have obviously been informed, but, with little evidence to go on, they are not hopeful of catching the thieves.
THEREFORE, if anyone noticed anything unusual that could be connected to this theft (e.g. a large vehicle parked outside the church or in the Smythe Hall car park overnight, or suspicious coming and goings during the course of any night prior to Sunday 1st November), or has any relevant house security camera footage, PLEASE contact Chris & John Dutfield on 01621 828806 or john.dutfield@btinternet.com .
